About the business suite
The business suite was strategically developed to complement MSU's integrated marketing plan and fulfill one of the university's primary goals: to build a more consistent and professional image for all MSU communications. As such, we are asking ALL staff to use the new MSU business suite without modification. For more information about the integrated marketing plan, visit:
http://www.montana.edu/cpa/marketing/brandletter.html

Paper
All materials are printed on Fraser Pegasus bright white paper with a smooth finish, a premium paper that offers superior print quality. It absorbs full-color printing well, and will accurately reflect MSU's new blue and gold color call-outs. The "bright white" version is a brilliant hue (compare it with regular copy paper) that portrays a clean and professional image. We chose a non-gloss paper because it more effectively complements MSU's simple-and-natural style. Even though Pegasus is a premium paper, we are able to offer printed letterhead to the MSU community at the same price as our former paper choice.

Design decisions
The business suite features a brand-new design, created with input from many campus groups, including Dean's Council, the Marketing Advisory Council, and the President's Executive Council. Because we purchased two-color business card "shells" in bulk, we were able to incorporate a three-side "bleed" at no additional charge. A bleed means that the blue ink prints all the way to the edge of the card on three sides and is a more subtly elegant of way adding to MSU's increasingly professional reputation. Cards are available with a blank back, or with a full-color photo of MSU in its spectacular setting.

The letterhead reflects the design style of the business card, and includes a two-inch margin at the left. This feature, while not that unusual in letterhead, adds an air of elegance and professionalism that will help MSU distinguish itself from competitors. To type correspondence on the new letterhead, set your word processing document with a 2" margin on the left and 1" margin on all other sides. Though the shape of the letter is different than that in the past, the available space will be the same, since the correspondence can start higher up on the page. If you like, you can download a Microsoft Word template with pre-set margins at http://www.montana.edu/cpa/graphics/forms/Word.doc

Logo and brand extensions
The letterhead and envelopes for some units and departments feature a college or agency "brand extension." This special version of the core MSU logo was created for all academic colleges, the libraries, and MSU's two agencies: Extension and the Agricultural Experiment Station. The previous version of MSU's logo did not accommodate these special marks. The business cards do not use the brand extensions, mainly due to size constraints, but also to assist with the bulk ordering of two-color shells.

Ordering and billing
Finally, all business cards, letterhead and envelopes are available via an on-line ordering system, which allows us to accommodate a large volume of customers more efficiently. And, instead of receiving two separate bills-one for typesetting and one for printing-customers will receive just one bill. See the links at the to of this page to order on-line.

We believe development and use of the new MSU business suite is one of many important steps toward increasing the reputation and visibility of Montana State University to all of our audiences. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
