Grants
Grants are awarded on the basis of financial need and do not have to be repaid. Grants are available only to those students seeking their first undergraduate degree. There are seven grants available through the Montana State University Financial Aid Office, all of which are awarded based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Pell Grant:
The FAFSA and subsequent Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number determine eligibility for the Federal Pell Grant. The amount of the award is based on the EFC and is prorated for those attending less than full-time.
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG):
SEOG funds are available to a limited number of students who demonstrate exceptional financial need based on their EFC. Because funds are limited, students who apply for financial aid by the priority deadline of March 1st have a greater chance of being considered for an SEOG Grant.
Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG):
An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students. To be eligible for an ACG, students must be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, be a US Citizen, and have successfully completed a rigorous high school program of study. Second year recipients must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at the end of their first academic year.
National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant):
A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students. To be eligible for a SMART grant, students must eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, be a US Citizen, major in physical, life, or computer sciences; math, technology, or engineering; or in a foreign language determined to be critical to national security. Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Baker Grant (MTAP):
The Baker Grant (MTAP) is available to Montana residents. In addition, the award is based on the EFC, as well as the student's earnings as reported on the FAFSA. Funds are limited, so early application is encouraged.
Montana Higher Education Grant (MTHEG):
MTHEG funds are available to Montana residents who demonstrate exceptional financial need as established by the FAFSA. Funds are limited, so early application is encouraged.
Access Grant:
Access Grant funds are available to Montana residents who demonstrate financial need as established by the FAFSA. Funds are limited, so early application is encouraged.
